What is the Bible?
The Bible is an account of God’s actions in the world, and his purpose for all creation. The Bible was written over a period of 16 centuries and is the work of 40 authors. It is a magnificent collection of 66 books with very different styles, all with the same message that God loves us.

This collection of books has a wonderful variety of literary styles. It provides us with many stories about the lives of good and bad people, about wars and journeys, about the life of Jesus, and about the early church. It comes to us in stories and dialogue, in stories and words, in song and verse, including history and prophecy.
The accounts in the Bible were not usually written down exactly as they happened. Instead, they were told over and over again and were quoted over the years before finally being written down. Yet similar themes can be found throughout the book. Along with the diversity, there is also a wonderful unity.

So what is the Bible? In addition to the above, The Bible:

A Guide to Living Life Well. It gives us a road map for the wonderful journey of life. Or to put it another way, on our journey through the ocean of life, the Bible is an anchor.

A storehouse of wonderful stories for children and adults. Remember Noah and the ark? Did Joseph have a coat of many colors? Was Daniel in the lion’s den? Jonah and the fish? What are the words of Jesus? These stories highlight the triumph and success of ordinary people.

A refuge in times of trouble. People who have been in pain, suffering, prison, and grief tell how turning to the Bible gave them strength in times of despair.

It is a treasure trove of insight into who we are. We are not mindless robots, but we are the wonderful creations of a God who loves us and gives us a purpose and a destiny.

A sourcebook for everyday life. A guide to help us find standards for our conduct, a guide to knowing right from wrong, and principles to help us navigate a confusing society where so often “anything goes.”
